What are the Market Conditions for Civil Engineers in Canada?
Written by Julie Willard on Friday September 2nd 2022
The following projections were published in December 2021 on the Government of Canada's website but I've taken key points and distilled them into Plain English here for you.

The Canadian Government determines what future job prospects will look like for Civil Engineers (in 2019-2028) based on the labour market conditions in recent years. Of course just because something happened yesterday doesn’t always mean it will happen tomorrow but the goal of this post is simply to decrease our uncertainty and find out if recent market conditions will continue or change in some significant way and help you prepare yourself for how to approach the market.

So. According to the Canadian Government's Census data: In 2019 - 2028, job openings are expected to total 18,900 while new job seekers are expected to total 26,500. So obviously this means a  much more competitive market place for civil engineers. This is also what we've been hearing in our calls after speaking to many engineers here in the market as well.

On the bright side, the Government of Canada has made significant investments in government infrastructure (roads, sewers, waters systems, etc) over the past couple years and this has significantly increased jobs.

The majority of job openings are expected to come from job growth and retirement with retirement expected to represent 53% of all openings.

The majority of job seekers are expected to come from recent graduates. Another major source of job seekers is expected to come from immigrants, largely because Canada maintains free trade agreements with certain countries and is also a very pro-immigration country.

So the take-away here is you can't just do what everyone else is doing--just applying online...because that's what everybody else is doing. You need to differentiate yourself. You need to learn how to market and sell your experience. There are no guarantees in this world but there are things you can do to massively increase your probabilities that you will find your exact desired job in your exact desired project type. That's what we do here. If you'd like to learn more, we're happy to chat with you and help.
